"Equality"

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. It means everyone deserves to be treated equally and each individual is equal before the eye of law. Equality does not discriminate people on the basic of religion, language, sex, ability and cultural diversity.


Professor Harold Laski maintains that equality implies absence of privilege, availability of the equal opportunity, all having access to the social benefits without any restriction and absence of economic and social exploitation. The equality has various dimensions such as legal, political and social equality.


The state has an obligation to protect the civil liberty and freedom. The judiciary system would be meaningless if it differentiate the citizens. The majority and minority group of people should be treated equally according to the law and constitution of the country.


Political equality is granted to each citizen in a democratic country. They equally have the right to participate in the political process and criticize the government. The civilian enjoy freedom of expression which contributes toward the welfare of the society.


The concentration of power and wealth within the elite group can create a big gap between rich and poor. It's responsible in bringing hardship and misery to the people. In fact, Burmese dictator Than Shwe and his associates enjoy a luxury life while fellow citizens are miserable of poverty and hunger.


Burmese regime undermines the social equality and individual freedom. They exploited natural resources of the country. They used force labors and forcibly confiscated large areas of land in extracting gold, diamond, timber, natural gas and oil.


It is a mere dream for Burmese people to have equal social status in the society. It’s because the dominant group continues to create inequality where the dominated suffer terribly. These intensify political unrest and social problems in the country.

Skyfri Himmel - Bjørn Eidvåg

Om en glede dag under solskinns i himmel er et sentralt tema i denne sang. Motivet til sanger er å beskrive en ung jente som ønsker å ha en fin dag og være sammen med venner. Dette tema går igjen i ”Skyfri himmel” sang teksten.

Jenta vil gjerne smile og glede for en fredelig dag. Hun vil forsett ønsker å ha ”problemfri time i gode venners lag”. Men var det likesom en drøm fordi livet ikke er slik som hun ønsker seg. Hun forstår at det er ikke mulig å ha en drømme dag hele tiden. I livet er det vanskelige tider som alle må gjennomgå.

Det var ikke som det skulle være og bli for henne. Hun har ikke drøm om de dårlige tingene i livet. Hun drømte om å ha mange gode ting som hun aldri fikk. Hun tror at alt skal gå bra, men det bli aldri slik fordi det er mange sår og vanskeligheter i det daglige liv.

Derfor gjør dagen vondt og lyset heller er ikke noe å glede for henne. Det er mørkere tid og den tiden er ikke hyggelig for henne. Den tiden er ikke bra for hennes tenkende. Det er ikke kjekt heller. Det er trist å være i mørke tid, men hun kan ikke gjøre noe for det.

Det er tungt å ta tilbake en barndomstid. Hver gang prøvde hun var det mislykka forsøk og det blir bare mer forlatt! Dette er en kontrast fordi barndom drømmen og ting skjer i livet hennes er mot til hverandre. Hun drømte om mange bra tingene da hun var barn og vil veldig gjerne ta tilbake denne tiden. Men kontrast er at det er ikke mulig å gjør det nå.

Sangteksten har tre vers som handler og forteller om nevnte punkt om en unge jente. Versene er lette og enkle å forstå. Sangens vers og refreng hører sammen. Det er naturlig beskrivelser av situasjonen om som har en god drøm om fremtid. Jeg synes at alle vil gjerne glede seg selv i drømmene med god humor.

Song broa skiller seg ut i en fin måte. Det bryter med rimmønstre fra første og andre, tredje og fjerde i sangtekstene.

Sang tekstene var på dialekt og det er ikke så lett å forstå med en gang. Jeg måtte leser gjennom alle setninger å ha en god forståelse. Jeg tror at låter var skrevet på Sauda dialekt. Jeg er sikkert at noen fra nord Norge vil ha noen vanskeligheter å forstå mens det ikke kunne noen problemer for de som bor sør i landet.

“No Speak English”

Many Spanish immigrate to the United States of America (USA) for a better life and future prospect. “No Speak English” is the story about Spanish immigrants to the USA. The husband in the story migrated first and then worked hard to earn a living there. He had two different jobs and woke up early in the morning. He worked all day long to save more money.

His wife and child joined him when he finally had enough money for family reunion. His wife is a tall and big woman. They were satisfied with the good food as they began to eat better food than they used to eat in their country. But Mamacita had some difficulties to integrate into the society. It’s because she could speak only a few words in English. This made it impossible for her to communicate with their American neighbors.

Mamacita felt home sick soon after she immigrated. She missed her home so much and felt alien in the new country. She kept thinking of the good times she had shared with friends and relatives back home. She sang an old and lonely song almost every day. She sounded terrible as her voice is similar to a seagull voice!

Their baby boy learned the English language quickly. He likes to watch TV and sing American songs as well. His mother felt so uncomfortable when the boy followed the advertisement song from TV and sang it out too.

I think the story wants to convey about the life of immigrants to America. Millions of people from different corners of the world immigrate to the USA each year. Some are successfully integrated while some cannot become part of American society. It would be beneficial to the immigrants to have learned English language and some skills of work before they finally resettle to America.

I like the way Mamacita’s husband work in the story. He has dedicative work for the whole family. He scarified his leisure times for work. He took free only after having completed two different jobs. As a result of which his family could join him. He is the man to have organized family reunion in the USA. It must have been so hard to have double jobs, but he did it. I am sure many people would not be able to do the same.

I think the story has portrayed Mamacita in a funny way. It’s humorous to read the way she spoke broken English. But I could not digest the fact that she is not interested in learning American language. She should have considered herself as American as they already immigrated in the country. They immigrated there for a better future. There is no prospect of leading a luxury life when one cannot integrate properly in the society. I think language should never be a barrier of integrations in America.
