Coop Mega AS Kristiansund

By Robert Sanga

As apprentice student of Transport & Logistics, I used to work at Coop Mega AS, Storkaia brygge, Kristiansund on every Friday each week during the academic year of 2011/2012. It is one of the biggest store shops in central part of the town. The shop has many products which are essential for every household.

The shop mainly sales food and drink. There are different kind of fruits and vegetables. Most of them are imported from abroad. Fast food is also available for customers.

Coop Mega AS has hundreds of food shops across the country. It had good reputation of maintaining a reasonable price for every product in the shop.  The consumer can apply for membership of the shop by which they automatically become a small stake holder of the company. There are several discount products for those who hold the membership.

- My field of work

I mainly concentrate working with fruits and vegetables department of the shop. I take responsibilities of relocating old products and putting new one to their respective places. It may sound easy task but it’s not because one needs to have basic knowledge about it.  There are different types of fruits and vegetables which names are difficult to remember. Most of them are imported and have varieties of foreign names as well.

- HES (health, environment and safety)

Health, environment and safety (HES) are a big issue when it comes to food products. It’s because the company cannot efforts the risk of having troubles with it.

There are certain rules and regulations for maintaining products in the shop. Both over date and torn out products have to be immediately recycled. They are neither good for the customer or for the store. It’s expensive to through away any product, but one has to be mindful of side effect it has for the customer.

The shop gives health, environment and safety assurance identity card to every employee. That can cover the medical expenses for work related accidents. Cleanliness of the shop is a high priority. It’s recommended for the employee to use hand glove which insure hygiene’s in handling products.

The shop is well connected with police, fire and security system. The shop manager, Frank, has immediate access to all of the emergency alarm systems if such requirements shall arise. All he needs to do is just push the bottom from his office.

- Dangers (Short / Long Term)

There is certain level of danger in every kinds of job. It’s dangerous to work with machines without knowing how to operate them. The shop has different kind of food products machines and anything can go wrong at any point of time.

I consider the danger that machine possess as immediate and short term danger. Muscular pain among the employees could be considered as long term effects. That’s because most of the employee has to walk around the shop. The modern sport shoes are not enough to protect the foot and body from those muscular pains as a result of long time job in the shop.

- Safety Regulations

There are some safety regulations in the shop. They are mostly instruction about if there is need to evacuate the building. Fire instruction is given and alarm systems are there. If anyone shall try to ransack the shop, then the shopkeeper have immediate access to police and Norway Security.

- Prevention of dangers

It’s not an easy task to prevent robbery. But the shop has arranged some preventive measures so that the shop is not a friendly place for the robbers.

None of explosive machines are installed without giving proper skills of understanding of the danger those machines possess to the employee.  Chicken grilling machine is a good example in that case. The cooks have to undergo a very systematic training as to properly operate the machines.
