In ancient time, people left their home countries in search for a new land. Viking, French, German and Anglo did it and conquered some places in the United Kingdom and other countries. They had found a better place for cultivation in England. As a result of which they successfully had resettled there. They spend their lives with the Celts and some tribes of British origin. Since then, England has been a place to live for varieties of different people and cultures.
Queen Elizabeth and Victoria had conquered a lot of countries during their time. In fact, England had one of the largest empires in the world. People from their conquered countries visited England and some of them had settled there permanently. This had contributed England to be culturally diverse. It’s interesting to note that people of different ethnical backgrounds have resettled there since ancient time.
In modern time, more and more people from Asia, European, America and from different countries have settled in England. Good transport and communication system make it possible for people to move quickly from one country to another. People have designated England as a place to resettle because the country provides better jobs and opportunities for better future. The industrial revolution had created a lot of jobs for both British and foreigners.
As the industries had demanded more laborers, more people left their countries for England. The industrial development of England has attracted million of immigrants to the country. In fact, there are more than 5 million people and 300 dialects speaking people from around the world, had settled in England. The country have to restrict immigration as the British themselves found some difficulties to find jobs in their own country in the later period of industrial revolution. Actually, the world as a whole faced great depression after the end of the Second World War.
A multicultural society has a lot of advantages and disadvantages. In a multicultural country, people learn different cultures, traditions and values. People share their very common way of living in a particular place. It creates understanding between people. People have normally a tolerance altitude towards each other.
Disadvantages of a multicultural society can make life difficult for many people as well.
If there is racial discrimination against a minority group, then it could easily turn into conflict and violence. There should be certain protection to those minorities. The law should guarantee the equal enjoyment of liberty to all minorities. It should give protection against their languages, religions and ethnicities.
Most of the big multicultural countries, like India, Canada, USA and England, have given the rights and opportunities to the minorities. This is the main reason why they have a successful multicultural society where harmony and peace prevails. But the few extremist and terrorist groups have made life difficult for other. They are, in fact, one of those disadvantages of multicultural country in modern time. However, the basic principles of democracy make it possible for people to live in peace in British multicultural society.
